Fairfax board approves express buses to Tysons

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a plan Tuesday to provide express bus service that will travel to Tysons Corner using the 495 Express Lanes.

The first route will begin service in January and the other two will follow in March.

The three routes are expected to run every 15 minutes during rush hour, in addition to making two trips in the middle of the day. One-way fares are expected to cost between $3.65 and $5.35. The final fares, routes and schedules will be decided later this fall.

Buses will travel to Tysons from Burke Centre and Lorton’s Virginia Railway Express stations as well as from the Springfield area. These buses will stop at Silver Line stations in Tysons when they open in addition to stopping at some major offices in Tysons.

“These new bus routes are a great step in the effort to reduce congestion on our roads and provide more transportation alternatives for our residents,” Sharon S. Bulova, chairwoman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. “People taking advantage of this new opportunity will enjoy a comfortable, dependable and quick commute.”

The Burke route, which will begin service in January, will run weekdays from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 4:15 to 7 p.m. It will also make midday trips from Tysons at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
