Green Line Metro train derails in PG

A Green Line Metro train derailed late Friday afternoon near the West Hyattsville station, shutting down service on a stretch of the line and causing delays throughout the Metro system, authorities said.

No injuries were reported, but Prince George’s County firefighters responded and were helping dozens of passengers exit the train near 29th Avenue and Ager Road, said Assistant Chief Ron Bridges, a fire department spokesman.

The train that derailed was heading toward the District from Greenbelt at about 4:45 p.m. Three cars derailed as the train approached West Hyattsville, according to officials.

By about 5:45 p.m, all passengers had been taken off the train, Metro said.

A Metro spokesman told WRC-TV (Ch. 4) that the cause was not known but that the extreme heat would be a factor for investigators to consider.

“It’s certainly something we’re going to have to look at,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said. “It’s too soon to know.”

Another problem on the Green Line was reported at about 5:30 p.m. on the southern end of the line. Track problems between Branch Avenue and Naylor Road and were forced to use a single track through that area.
