Metro fired two escalator technicians last week after a 52-year-old woman fell into an escalator access hatch at Pentagon Station, officials said during a board committee meeting Thursday.
The escalator was undergoing maintenance and was not moving, officials said. The customer fell into the hole at 6:30 a.m. on April 20, more than four hours after an escalator technician had logged off the job, according to Metro. The injured woman was treated for lacerations at a local hospital and discharged April 22, officials said.
The opening at the top of an escalator was similar to a manhole and should have been covered, officials said. The technicians were terminated on April 21, according to Metro.
