No VRE service on Labor Day

In observance of Labor Day, Virginia Railway Express will not operate on Monday.

Service will resume Tuesday, VRE officials said.

With children heading back to school, VRE officials reminded riders Tuesday of the railway’s “security blanket” policy, which helps riders who have children in daycare.

Because many daycare centers charge a late fee if people don’t pick up their children on time, VRE promises to help cover the cost. If riders take a train that is scheduled to arrive at least 30 minutes before they need to pick up their child, VRE will cover late fees if the train does not get to the station within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.

The security blanket service can be used up to four times in a year, VRE officials said. To participate, fill out the form at www.vre.org/programs/securityblanket.htm and mail it to VRE along with a copy of the daycare late fee receipt and a copy of the train ticket. Riders who participate will receive a check within 30 days, VRE officials said.
