Southwest repairing planes with cracks, returning them to service

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines says four planes being repaired for cracks in their aluminum skin will probably return to service Saturday.

Southwest says a fifth plane will be held back for additional, previously scheduled maintenance.

Southwest inspected 79 of its older Boeing 737 aircraft after a hole opened in the roof of a similar plane over Arizona last week, forcing an emergency landing.

The airline said Thursday that mechanics were replacing an 18-inch section of the roof on the five planes with cracks. The Arizona plane will face a longer repair job.
