Windy weather may affect your commute, travel plans

[This post has been updated]

A cold front bringing the potential for severe thunderstorms is sweeping through the D.C. region this afternoon, and strong winds could pose problems for drivers of high-profile vehicles.

There is also a risk for falling limbs and other debris to bring down power lines and to cause problems on the roads.

The Capital Weather Gang says a tornado watch is in effect for southern Maryland, portions of Virginia and the eastern Carolinas. A wind advisory is in effect for most of the Washington metro area until midnight. Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 are possible, according to the National Weather Service. As a result, the Maryland Transportation Authority has canceled two-way operations on the Bay Bridge for Friday, and warned drivers to expect delays.

If you’re flying, the weather may also affect your plans. Several airports along the East Coast are already experiencing weather delays. They include Reagan National, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Newark, John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.
