Snow, severe cold make for icy commute

Light snow and severe cold could make for a slow commute Thursday morning.

So far, there are no major problems to report on Washington area roadways. Plows have begun salting streets in the District, Maryland and Virginia, where most areas received a dusting to an inch of snow overnight.

Drivers are advised to use caution, especially on side streets, and to give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.

WMATA has reported weather-related alerts on several Metrobus lines, which will bypass certain stops due to icy conditions.

Metrorail says all trains running on time, and  crews are ready to respond if the severe cold results in cracks in the rails.
