Drivers might encounter delays Wednesday at 16th Street and Benning Road NE as crews work to make way for the District’s new streetcar system.

Workers will be shifting traffic lanes as they put in cables and other equipment to make way for the streetcars, which are expected to begin operating later this year on H Street and Benning Road. This stretch of work will take about four weeks, officials said.

Other work to make way for the streetcars is taking place on H Street NE in the 900, 600 and 1300 blocks. More work will start soon on H Street NE in the 500 block and at 12th Street, District transportation officials said.

In the Benning Road and 16th Street segment, officials said, crews are putting in “cross-bonds” and have to excavate a four-foot wide section of the street to put in cables. The equipment allows for traction power of the streetcars along the tracks.

Drivers should expect changes to see some traffic lanes closed or changes to some turn lanes. Sidewalks may also be closed as the work is done.
