Amtrak, MARC Penn Line service restored

Amtrak’s signal system stopped working properly for about 45 minutes on Friday afternoon, leading to issues for trains along the Northeast Corridor and on MARC’s Penn Line.

The issue first cropped up at 2:50 p.m. and was resolved at about 3:35 p.m., said Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz.

Amtrak trains between Washington and Trenton, N.J., had to stop moving due to the outage. In addition, trains on MARC’s Penn Line were halted.

The signal system is what allows locomotive engineers to receive instructions about moving down the railroad, so while no trains lost power, they were unable to proceed. Schulz said it’s unclear what caused the problem.

Amtrak and MARC trains are moving again, albeit with some delays. Amtrak trains currently out along the Northeast Corridor are experiencing delays of about 30 to 45 minutes, Schulz said. MARC trains are also experiencing delays of at least 20 to 25 minutes.


All MARC Penn Line trains have stopped due to an issue with Amtrak’s signals, according to the Maryland Transit Administration. Metro will honor MARC tickets, the MTA reports.

It’s unclear if the signal issue is also affecting any Amtrak trains. We have reached out to Amtrak and will update this post with any response.
