Williams advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. Improbably seeded 28th in the tournament because her ranking tumbled during her 10-month absence from tennis because of injuries, Williams couldn’t resist getting a little dig in.
“Now that I don’t get byes any more because my ranking fell, I’m used to playing every day.”
Williams will play the winner of the match between Andrea Petkovic of Germany and Caroline Wozniacki, who’s No. 1 in seeding, world rankings and the heart of Rory McIlroy. “I’m happy that I’m through and really excited,” Williams said. “... I’m just happy to still be here and be in the tournament. It’s fun.”
