“Dancing with the Stars:” Donald Driver is the champion (video)

When Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd were pronounced the winners of “Dancing with the Stars,” Driver released an “in your face, Roger Goodell” celebration so excessive that it would have prompted a 15-yard penalty and maybe even a stiff fine had it occurred on a football field.

He jumped. He ran. He rolled on the dance floor. “I was on fire. I had to roll around to get the fire out,” Driver said on “Good Morning America.”

What clinched the win for the Green Bay Packers wide receiver? A freestyle dance Monday night that featured, um, a Wild West motif and Cowboy Troy (not Aikman).

“I would have to say it was a miracle,” Driver said. “We did what we had to do on the floor, and we knew we had to leave it up to the judges and the fans. The fans made the decision, and the fans loved our freestyle last night. I think the freestyle put us on top, and after that, there was no looking back.”

Driver is the third NFL player, after Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward, to win the moderately-coveted Mirror Ball Trophy. It helps to have a vast audience of football fans — particularly from Cheesehead Nation — ready to vote, but Driver cited another factor. “We’re very competitive. We’re always up for the challenge,” he said, via ESPN Milwaukee and Jason Wilde. “And we were up for the challenge once again. We knew it was going to be a battle,. It was hard, but she [Murgatroyd] pushed me through it, and now we’re champs.”

Speaking of football, it’s time to practice rather than dance on a football field. Driver missed the Packers’ first organized team activities Tuesday and today and there’s some uncertainty about his future with the team, given his age and the team’s receiver depth. The Packers weren’t certain when Driver would arrive, with the next OTA set for May 30.

“It depends on the work week. But as far as when he actually arrives, I don't have that specific,” Coach Mike McCarthy said. “But I would anticipate he'd be involved in the workouts next week.”

At least he wasn’t far from his teammates’ minds this week.

Speaking of teammates, am so proud of @Donald_Driver80 and his accomplishment tonight!!!Enjoy the whirlwind the next few days quickie!!!
