A spectator yelled, then ran toward Woods and threw the pup as he stood over a putt at the par-3 No. 7 hole. The missle got nowhere near Woods, whose new caddie Joe LaCava ran toward the man, who quickly surrendered to security. (Imagine what Stevie Williams would have done to the guy. And the offending hot dog, for that matter.)
Woods was nonchalant afterward, smiling as he talked about the incident. “I guess he wanted to be in the news.” Woods said, “and I’m sure he will be.”
Woods missed the birdie putt on the hole and finished the tournament with a 7-under 277 that put him in the middle of the pack. However, for the first time since the 2010 Deutsche Bank tournament he had three straight rounds in the 60s, so he’s got that going for him.
“I got better every day, and unfortunately, a couple times I didn’t get the momentum going when I had a couple of chances to make putts,” Woods, playing in his first tournament in seven weeks, said.
