Kohl’s is selling Nationals “NL East Division Champions” shirts

The nation’s capital is awash in the excitement of postseason baseball as the Washington Nationals gear up for D.C.’s first playoff baseball game since 1933.

But the folks over at Kohl’s appear to be getting a little ahead of themselves.

Reader Rob spotted these Majestic brand shirts at the store’s Gaithersburg location that tout the Nats as the “2012 NL East Division Champions.”

The Nats punched their ticket to the playoffs last Thursday but have yet to clinch the division, and after they suffered their seventh loss in their last 11 games on Tuesday in Philadelphia, their lead on second-place Atlanta has dwindled to four games.

With eight games left on the schedule, it would take a monumental collapse from Washington for the Braves to snatch the division title away. But that’s precisely what happened to Atlanta last October when the Braves blew an 8 1/2 game lead in the final 23 days of the season.

Adam Kilgore told Nats fans to back away from the panic button after Tuesday’s 6-3 loss to the Phillies — a team Washington plays five times in its final eight games. But no one is popping the second round of champagne for an impending division title just yet, either — except for the staff at one rogue Kohl’s, apparently.
