NFL commits $200 million toward new 49ers stadium

NFL owners, meeting Thursday in Indianapolis, approved $200 million in funding for a proposed new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif.

Jed York, the 49ers’ president, posted on Twitter during the meeting that the funding had been approved.

Construction could begin on the approximately $1 billion stadium project this spring. The stadium could open for the 2014 or 2015 seasons.

“It’s huge,” York said after the meeting. “We’ve been working on this since 1997.”

The owners meeting lasted less than 40 minutes, a sign that the league has little pressing business at the moment with its labor deal and new television contracts in place.
