The Sacramento Kings were at loose ends on the basketball court and at odds in the locker room. As a result, Coach Paul Westphal has been fired.

Keith Smart will coach the 2-5 team, which plays the Milwaukee Bucks tonight in Sacramento. The Kings, who rank near the bottom of the league on offense and defense, reached a low point Saturday night when players questioned Westphal’s offense.

Off the court, DeMarcus Cousins has feuded with Westphal amid reports that the second-year player had demanded a trade.

“The overall performance level of the team has not approached what we felt was reasonable to expect,” General Manager Geoff Petrie said.

On Christmas Eve, owner Joe Maloof denied a CBSSports.com report that Westphal was about to be axed.
