After news broke early Tuesday evening that Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts were expected to part company, Manning and Colts owner Jim Irsay flew together to Indianapolis on Irsay’s plane.

“It was a long, emotional flight,” Irsay tweeted early this morning, “... now the sun is trying to rise.”

Manning and Irsay had little comment for reporters who met their flight from south Florida, where Manning has been working out as he continues to regain arm strength after neck surgeries. “We’ll talk tomorrow,” Manning said, via WISH-TV, as Irsay drove him away from the plane. Pressed for how he and Irsay are faring and more details, he added, “we’re good, we’re good. We’re gonna talk tomorrow. We’re gonna do it the right way tomorrow.”

Asked if everything is “a-okay” given the acrimonious back-and-forth between the two that marked last month’s Super Bowl in Indianapolis, Manning said, “Yeah, yeah. We’re good.”

When his release after 13 seasons (and 14 years) in Indy is official at 4 p.m. today, Manning, who will turn 36 on March 24, will be free to sign immediately with another NFL team.

“Until it was over, he was a Colt through and through,” Cooper Manning, the oldest of the three Manning boys, told USA Today. “Now he'll have to re-evaluate and see what this next chapter reads like.

“Circumstances lined up for the Colts to go in a whole new direction. It's hard to believe he won't be back there in Indianapolis. It's hard to imagine.”

Manning’s triceps nerve, his brother said, is recovering at a steadily increasing rate, but he wasn’t saying anything about what Peyton Manning’s future might hold — or where it might lie.

“I don't think Peyton's done any personal diligence on what the next step is,” Cooper Manning said. “Now he'll have to re-evaluate and see what this next chapter reads like.”
