The first NFL season of running back Ryan Williams may have ended with a crushing injury Friday night in a preseason game in Green Bay.
Williams suffered what Arizona Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he was “pretty certain” was a ruptured patellar tendon. If so, Williams would need surgery and be out the rest of the season. “If it is what we suspect, then, yes, it’s a season-ender,” Whisenhunt said.
Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, was hurt in the second half when a Packers player appeared to land on his leg after a carry. “He’s a good kid, first and foremost,” running back Beanie Wells said. “He’s going to be a good football player here and guys like him. He’s one of the guys everyone cares about.”
Williams was an important part of the Cardinals’ plans as Wells’ backup — so important that the team opted to trade Tim Hightower to the Washington Redskins. Now, they’re thin at the position.
Williams, via Twitter, seemed upbeat, joking that he “woke up today and forgot what happened...smh big ol thing on my leg.” Williams, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee as a sophomore at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Va., said he was headed for an MRI and tweeted:
“It happens, doc said recoveries from this injury are very good so expect a very strong ru next year with a even bigger chip on my shoulder. ... I’m still breathing, still have a a job (for now lol), family and friends so don’t feel too bad Twitter fam, Ive overcame worst in my life.”
I wish I could tweet everyone back but its too many, to the ones who genuinely feel for me thank you, it means a lot, its football
