"Yes, Paul Ryan did give me a call and he … advised me that it would be good for me to step down," the besieged Missouri Senate candidate told NBC's "Today" on Wednesday morning. "I told him…that I would make the decision, that it's not about me."
NBC News first reported Monday that Ryan had called Akin, but the VP nominee's staff would not confirm.
"This is not about my ego," Akin added in the "Today" interview. "The people in the state of Missouri elected me."
