A staffer at the Washington Times tells the Erik Wemple Blog that he received a call from the newspaper’s HR department yesterday afternoon directing him to appear at a “mandatory” meeting at 11 a.m. Friday. The purpose of the meeting wasn’t disclosed. “I wonder what that’s about,” the staffer mused.

“It’s not hard to read between the lines given everything that’s gone down around here,” says the staffer.

That’s a reference to a late November memo from Washington Times top editor David Jackson apprising the staff that layoffs were in the planning stages.
