Fox News host Bill O’Reilly last night chatted with jack-of-all-trades Adam Carolla about America’s stickiest social problems. The backdrop for the conversation was a recent clash between Carolla and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom over why blacks and Latinos suffer high rates of poverty and dislocation.
Following the Carolla-Newsom showdown, the Huffington Post published a roundup with this headline “Adam Carolla To Gavin Newsom: What’s Wrong With Blacks And Latinos?” O’Reilly charged that the piece implied that Carolla was racist.
Being accused of racism by lefty media, O’Reilly and Carolla agreed, is the price that folks pay for criticizing minorities or gays. The conversation then moved on to what liberal politicians like Newsom could do to fight poverty and other social ills. Some interesting opinions emerged:
CAROLLA: First thing you need to do is admit there’s a problem. Second thing you need to do is distill the problem down to what it is, which is lack of parenting and single-family parents and the history of poverty and the perpetuation of poverty because of this. And then, you have to do something that they’re not willing to do because they need their vote. They have to be willing to judge. And they will not judge.
O’REILLY: Right. There’s no judgments made about fathers abandoning. Oh, they say it’s bad. But they don’t go in and form any programs to humiliate the fathers who abandon their children, or the girls who are getting pregnant at 13 or 14.
