On Fox News today, media analyst Howard Kurtz again spotlighted the role that “activists” played in blowing up the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman case:

Overall, I would say the media kind of seized this case, which didn’t get any national coverage in the beginning — until activists portrayed it as a racial outrage — and there was just too much sort of exploiting this one case, this one tragic killing, for ratings and circulation and clicks. And we saw that with the wall-to-wall coverage on some cable networks of this trial.

An alternative explanation: People, some of them “activists,” were acutely interested in the story. They watched and they clicked as the media pursued a story with broad implications for criminal justice in contemporary America.
