We’ve all heard plenty of scare stories about Russian computer hackers. But just how serious is the hacking threat to visitors at the Sochi Games? In a bit of experimental journalism, NBC News ventured to find out. Correspondent Richard Engel teamed up with a computer expert and unsheathed a brand-new smartphone and computer. They went to a restaurant and began using the smartphone to checking out info on the Sochi Olympics. Results were strong: “Almost immediately, we were hacked. . . . Malicious software hijacked our phone before we even finished our coffee.” A journalist’s dream, in other words: Corral a great little story while drinking a cup of coffee.
