Across all of cable news, anchors have figured out various ways to perform — or not perform — the stunt known as the top-of-the-hour handoff. When Chris Hayes hands off to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, for instance, mutual wonky respect prevails. When Brooke Baldwin hands off to Jake Tapper on CNN, you’ll hear a little small talk, a little news talk. Fox News anchors Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity “don’t speak,” according to a book on Fox News chief Roger Ailes, so there was* no handoff.

Perhaps MSNBC host Ronan Farrow should consider withholding the handoff for a week or two, as this very painful Huffington Post video collection all but argues. Warning: You’ll want to watch this video, once.

*Correction: Original version said “there’s no handoff,” referencing the period when O’Reilly directly preceded Hannity. Since last fall, he has led into “The Kelly File.” Apologies.
