A while back, the Erik Wemple Blog credited CNN for doing a fair bit of genuine explanatory journalism in its coverage of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Perhaps in that vein, CNN weather guru Chad Myers this afternoon used one of those great screen thingies to explain just how laborious is the process of mapping the ocean floor with a single ship, which can cover merely 5 square miles per hour. For the entire 130 million square miles of ocean floor, that ship would spend 2,995 years poking around, though “clearly it wouldn’t take that long to do the southern Indian Ocean.”
So, maybe just 500 years or something?
If such somber, hope-killing explanations continue on CNN’s flood-the-zone MH370 coverage, the network may start explaining viewers onto competing channels.
