As reported in an earlier post, MSNBC host Ed Schultz yesterday suggested the Republican National Committee (RNC) boss Reince Priebus was being shifty about his whereabouts on Sunday night. “The Ed Show” thought it had proof — a picture! — that he was in Philadelphia watching the Cowboys-Eagles game along with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Meanwhile, the RNC said he was in D.C. for a dinner.

Turned out that “The Ed Show” was looking at an outdated picture. No shiftiness on part of the RNC.

The apology that Schultz mouthed on this afternoon’s program was laudable, at least under the gutter-high standards of media apologies. This is what he said:

IT’S TIME TO CORRECT THE RECORD. LAST NIGHT ON THIS PROGRAM WE SHOWED A PICTURE OF CHRIS CHRISTIE, COWBOYS OWNER JERRY JONES AND REINCE PRIEBUS. WE THOUGHT IT WAS FROM SUNDAY NIGHT’S GAME IN PHILADELPHIA BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY FROM LAST YEAR. PRIOR TO THE SHOW WE HAD CALLED THE RNC AND ASKED IF CHAIRMAN REINCE PRIEBUS HAD ATTENDED THE SUNDAY GAME AND WE WERE TOLD THAT MR. PRIEBUS HAD BEEN IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THAT NIGHT. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE USED THE PHOTO, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE DID. THAT WAS OUR MISTAKE. THE PICTURE, WE KNOW NOW, WAS FROM LAST YEAR’S GIANTS/COWBOYS GAME. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE ERROR AND TO ALL INVOLVED.

Bold text inserted to highlight something that Schultz apparently just couldn’t bring himself to say: “We apologize for the error and to the Republican National Committee.”
