In the weeks since he declared his presidential candidacy, Donald Trump has said a number of offensive and reprehensible things. Yet to the knowledge of the Erik Wemple Blog, he hadn’t earned a bleeping from a TV news outlet till today. Did he swear? Did he call someone something nasty?
No, he reeled off a telephone number. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.), that is.
Yesterday, Graham called Trump a “jackass” for having questioned the war-hero status of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Trump returned volley in a speech from South Carolina today, disparaging Graham by calling him an “idiot,” for example. He also alleged that a few years ago Graham had asked him to plug his name in an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” the morning program on Fox News. “He said, could you mention my name. I said yes. … And he gave me his number, and I found the card!”
Not content to stop there, Trump started reeling off the Graham’s number: “I don’t know if it’s the right number. Let’s try it. 2-0-2 2-2-8 [BLEEP!],” goes the treatment on CNN.
CNN clearly wasn’t going to be complicit in violating the sanctity of Graham’s phone. Not that such a step did anything to stifle circulation of the number:
