WJLA-TV reporter Stephen Tschida and a camera crew today descended on Eastern Market to cover a press conference held by Mayor Muriel Bowser on the creation of a task force to curtail robberies in the District. In the process, they discovered what a hot story they were on: As WJLA is reporting, the crew’s vehicle was victimized during the proceedings. “[T]hieves tore through the news vehicle early Wednesday afternoon and a culprit smashed a window out of the car and stole a cache of equipment,” notes the story, which goes on to say that the break-in took place just feet away from where Bowser and D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier made their remarks.

For context on the brazenness of this event, have a look at the tweet below from legendary D.C. reporter Tom Sherwood:

WJLA is promising “more on this developing story as information becomes available.” It’s unlikely that perpetrators are targeting the media here, as Capitol Hill has suffered a wave of street crime in recent months.
