Don’t get Loesch wrong. She clarified that she wasn’t alleging that media folks love tragedy. “But I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold. … And notice that I said ‘crying white mothers’ because there are thousands of grieving black mothers in Chicago every weekend. Where’s the CNN town hall for Chicago?” On Wednesday night, CNN’s Jake Tapper hosted a town hall featuring survivors of last week’s Parkland, Fla., school shooting and congressional lawmakers; Loesch also answered pointed questions about gun control.
For the record: CNN did a previous gun town hall in January 2016, just weeks after 14 died in the San Bernardino, Calif., mass shooting. The Erik Wemple Blog looks forward to a Chicago edition of this format.
As for Chicago gun coverage, though, don’t be fooled: CNN has done plenty of it, in story after story after story after story after story after story after story. Under the direction of host Chris Hayes, MSNBC did a town hall on Chicago violence. The New York Times in 2016 dispatched a platoon of reporters and other staffers to chronicle Chicago gun violence.
