A post from Boy Genius Report on Tuesday suggested that the latest release would be pushed out that day, but Apple watchers saw the 10 a.m. Pacific Time deadline come and go. Jim Dalrymple of The Loop correctly predicted that while the update would be earlier than expected, it would land Wednesday.

New features in the latest version are:

- Personal hotspot: The personal hotspot feature is built into the latest iOS, letting the iPhone share its data connection with up to five other devices.

-AirPlay updates: Third-party applications now have access to AirPlay and can stream to a television, and users can also stream video from their Photos app.

-Home sharing: Users can stream their music and video over their wireless network on any iOS device without having to sync.

iPad side switch: iPad users can customize the side switch to lock screen rotation or mute the volume.

Improved Safari performance: Apple says the new iOS runs Java Script up to twice as fast as in 4.2.
