Kenton Cool, a British mountaineer, became the first person to send a Twitter message from the top of Mount Everest on Thursday.

This was Cool’s ninth trip up the world’s tallest peak. His expedition was sponsored by Samsung and he used the company’s much-hyped Galaxy S II to send the historic tweet.

Ncell, a mobile carrier in Nepal, installed a 3G network base station at the base of Mount Everest in October 2010.

Others have turned to Twitter to log their journey up Everest — Irish climber Gavin Bate, is also currently giving Twitter updates on his sixth attempt to reach the summit and raise money for his charity, Moving Mountains.
