If you’re a gamer who’s fussy about the way your Xbox looks, then it’s probably worth nothing that the industry-leading console is getting a makeover soon.

Instead of the glossy finish that Microsoft introduced with the slim Xbox 360 — you know, about the time that the PS3 went matte — Xbox is returning to a less fingerprint-susceptible look.

Larry Hyrb, a.k.a. Xbox Live’s Major Nelson, said on his blog that the company is officially getting rid of the glossy box in favor of matte models set to hit shelves in the next few weeks.

Special-edition consoles will be your only choice for the finish, he said. “Of course, we still may offer a gloss finish on Limited Edition consoles like the upcoming Gears of War 3 Console,” Hyrb wrote.

It may be a small change, but if you — or the gamer in your life — really wanted an Xbox with a high sheen, you should know your time is running out.
