Nintendo slashes price of the Wii

Nintendo is dropping the suggested retail price of its Wii system to $149.99. Starting May 15, the newly priced Wii system will come in either black or white with the Mario Kart Wii game and a matching colored Wii Wheel accessory, replacing the previously included Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort games. In addition to the new price for the Wii, Nintendo announced a cheaper line of games priced at $19.99. Called “Nintendo Selects,” the games — The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Mario Super Sluggers and Wii Sports — will also launch with their new prices on May 15. Wii Sports has never been sold on its own before.

The drop comes soon after Nintendo’s announcement that it is working on a new Wii, to be unveiled at this June’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. The second Wii is expected in stores sometime in 2012.
