Facebook is making a big announcement today to the media — according to a tweet from tech blogger Robert Scoble — and many are expecting the social network to launch its own coupon service, Facebook Deals.

Business Insider and The Next Web have reported that the social network will start launch its shopping site this week, taking on the market currently dominated by Groupon and LivingSocial. A D.C.-based company, LivingSocial, announced earlier this week that it has raised $400 million in funding.

Facebook has been offering check-in coupons and deals through its Places feature since November. The full-fledged service, according to the social network’s Deals page, will offer more social coupon options.

Facebook’s page says that Deals will be “available soon” in Atlanta, San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas and Austin, Tx.

(Post Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Donald E. Graham sits on Facebook’s board of directors, and the newspaper and many Post staffers use Facebook for marketing purposes.)
