Kotaku reported that a Japanese Sony representative confirmed that the company will stop making the PSPGo to concentrate its efforts on the next-generation portable.

The original report came from a Japanese Web site called AVWatch. According to that report, the PSPGo’s current stock will be sold, but Sony will no longer manufacture the digital-only handheld.

The PSPGo debuted in 2009. Earlier this year, Sony announced it would be producing the Xperia Play, an Android-based gaming cellphone with a sliding design similar to the PSPGo.

Combined with the company’s efforts on the NGP, it’s not a huge surprise to see the PSPGo, which was never really adopted by gamers, get the boot.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request to confirm the reports in the Japanese media.
