On Saturday, Sony reinstated some of the services targeted in an online attack that caused a 26-day outage and a massive data breach of two of its networks.
The company also released a software update requiring all PSN users to change their passwords. Users can only change their passwords from their own PlayStation 3, or the PS3 they used to activate their account or through a validated e-mail.
The company had to briefly turn off services following the relaunch as people flooded back online to make the changes and use the network after more than three weeks of downtime.
So what’s back?
Sign in for PSN and Qriocity users, online gameplay for the PS3 and PSP, Music Unlimited for Qriocity users, access to third-party services such as Netflix, Hulu and MLB.tv, Friends lists, chat functions, trophy comparison, and PlayStation Home are all set to be up and running, but customers still can’t purchase anything from Qriocity and the PlayStation store.
Sony Online Entertainment said that it has reinstated “nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games,”as well as its game forums and Web sites. SOE will also require players to reset their passwords.
Sony executive Kazuo Hirai explained the restoration and the company’s “Welcome Back” program in a video Saturday:
“The last few weeks have been tough for all of us,” Hirai said. “And please know that we’re doing everything we can to fully restore net services around the world and to regain your trust over the days, weeks and months to come.”
The services are being restored in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, Dow Jones Newswires reported, but not in Japan.
Kazushige Nobutani, director of the Media and Content Industry department at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, told Dow Jones Newswires that Sony must explain more about its anti-hacking and financial information protection measures before it is allowed to reinstate its network in Japan.
