Promoted tweets from brands users follow will show up in their streams at or near the top. Tweets will appear just once and can be dismissed with a single click, the company said Thursday.
Several brands, including Groupon, Starbucks and charities such as the American Red Cross are in the pilot group of organizations participating in the testing phase. Users should see the tweets in their streams over the next few weeks.
This approach to advertising might get a better reception than Twitter’s last attempt at promotion — the dreaded quickbar — because users can choose which brands they receive information from and easily remove the tweets from their stream. Promoted tweets will have an icon next to them to identify them as ads.
