The Office of Personnel Management has announced that federal offices in the D.C. area will be closed Monday because of Hurricane Sandy.

OPM said non-emergency employees will be granted an excused absence, except those who are required to telework, are on official travel outside of the area, are on leave without pay, or are on an alternative work schedule day off.

According to the OPM announcement:

“Telework-Ready Employees who are scheduled to perform telework on the day of the announcement or who are required to perform unscheduled telework on a day when Federal offices are closed to the public must telework the entire workday or request leave, or a combination of both, in accordance with their agencies’ policies and procedures, subject to any applicable collective bargaining requirements.

“Emergency Employees are expected to report to their worksites unless otherwise directed by their agencies.”

U.S. Postal Service officials at the agency’s Washington headquarters said that despite the likelihood of relatively normal service across most of the country, local managers plan to evaluate conditions on Monday morning and decide whether letter carriers can safely deliver the mail.
