Federal workers weighed in at today’s live chat discussion on a possible government shutdown and how they and their agencies have been faring under continuous stopgap budgets. The Post and GovLoop, the social networking site for feds, hosted the chat.

Feds said they have heard virtually nothing about shutdown plans through official channels.

They wondered whether the IRS would stay open to process tax returns and what would happen to contractors during a shutdown. A big topic for discussion was who would and wouldn’t be considered essential. Participants said too much time has been spent at their agencies planning for a shutdown that may or may not happen because politicians can’t agree on a federal budget.
