Carney jabs House GOP on Postal Service decision

White House press secretary Jay Carney declined to offer a definitive opinion Wednesday on the U.S. Postal Service’s plan to end Saturday delivery, saying the White House only learned of the decision on Tuesday and that the agency is independent.

Carney did, however, say the White House prefers a comprehensive package of reforms for the Postal Service. He blamed the Republican-led House for the lack of movement on that front.

“We put forward a year and a half ago a series of proposals for reform of the Postal Service that would put it on much more firm financial ground and it passed the Senate,” Carney said. “Unfortunately the House failed to take it up.”

It’s worth noting that the president’s 2013 budget proposal would authorize the Postal Service to end Saturday mail delivery. (See page 31 of the budget).

When a reporter pointed this out during the daily briefing, Carney responded that “it was one element of a more complete set of actions, one that we regret the House failed to act on.”
