Donors in the annual federal charity drive now will be able to support local charities outside their own area.

The charity that relies on contributions from federal employees faces uncertainty because of the shutdown and furloughed workers.

Both the number of donors and the amount contributed to the Combined Federal Campaign decreased again in 2012.

The government plans to overhaul its annual internal charity drive, affecting policies ranging from how charities are admitted to the program to how and when employees may make contributions.

Federal agencies have been told they may solicit contributions from federal workers for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
