Beck, Atogwe out for preseason opener

As expected, John Beck will not play in the Washington Redskins’ preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe also will miss the game.

Beck, who is competing for the starting quarterback job, strained a groin last Saturday and was limited in practice all week. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said that he wouldn’t play the quarterback unless he was 100 percent. On Wednesday, Beck still wasn’t able to sprint to his right or left without pain.

Beck was on the field Friday night during pre-game warm-ups, but didn’t do any running. Instead, he just took some half-speed five-step drops and threw to receivers.

Rex Grossman will start at quarterback for the Redskins.

At free safety, Chris Horton will start in place of Atogwe, who missed all of this week’s practices with a hamstring injury. And at running back, of course, Tim Hightower is starting for Ryan Torain, who has a broken hand.

The Redskins’ starting lineup on offense looks like this: WR Santana Moss, LT Trent Williams, LG Kory Lichtensteiger, C Will Montgomery, RG Chris Chester, RT Jammal Brown, TE Fred Davis, WR Jabar Gaffney, QB Rex Grossman, FB Darrel Young, RB Tim Hightower.

On defense, the starting lineup is: LDE Adam Carriker, NT Barry Cofield, RDE Stephen Bowen, LOLB Ryan Kerrigan, ILB London Fletcher, ILB Rocky McIntosh, ROLB Brian Orakpo, LCB DeAngelo Hall, RCB Josh Wilson, SS Reed Doughty, FS Chris Horton.
