Just two days after showing he’s still capable of explosive returns, Brandon Banks had to sit out practice Sunday with a sore knee.

Banks has missed several practices this training camp and has been limited in others because of irritation in his left knee, the same joint he had surgery on last season.

“It’s a little sore,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “The doctors felt it would be better to give him a day of rest.”

Shanahan said Banks had his knee drained. He didn’t take the field as a receiver in Friday’s preseason win over Pittsburgh and only lined up as a return specialist three times. He returned one kickoff for 58 yards, returned a punt for 19 and had one fair catch.

Banks said he felt fine and called Sunday a “maintenance day.”

“I’m just doing what I’m told to do by the trainers,” he said. “I don’t have no idea. I feel good. I think I can go out there and play. I’m just doing what the trainers tell me to do.”
