Washington Redskins kick/punt returner Brandon Banks has been ruled out of Friday night’s preseason game at Indianapolis because of a sore left knee, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday.

Banks, who had surgery on the knee last November and has missed six practices during training camp, is experiencing some swelling in the knee as well.

The second-year wideout last week returned a kickoff 58 yards and took a punt back 19 yards in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh.

The 5-foot-7, 155-pound Banks sat out Sunday’s practice when the soreness that plagued him last week returned, practiced fully Monday, but wasn’t able to go Tuesday.

Fellow second-year wideout Terrence Austin will serve as the primary kick/punt returner in Friday’s game at Indianapolis, Shanahan said.
