Rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson cleared waivers a day after the team released him to make room on the 53-man roster for veteran defensive back Phillip Buchanon.

Thompson will be signed to the Redskins’ eight-man practice squad, according to a league source.

Drafted out of Boise State with the 10th pick of the seventh round this spring, Thompson appeared in two of Washington’s first four games and recorded two tackles.

He will join fellow seventh-rounders Aldrick Robinson (wide receiver) and Maurice Hurt (offensive lineman) on the practice squad. Eight of the Redskins’ other nine 2011 draft picks remain on the 53-man roster. Second-rounder Jarvis Jenkins is on injured reserve.

Buchanon just completed a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
