Graham Gano entered training camp facing an uncertain future with the Redskins, but it’s hard to imagine the first two preseason games unfolding any better for him. Not only is Gano 6-for-6 on field goal attempts, but his family added a new member earlier in the week.
Gano’s wife, Brittany, went into labor Wednesday afternoon while Gano was on the practice field. He rushed to join her and just a couple of hours later, she gave birth to Bryson Clark.
“He was definitely on my mind, him and my wife, while I was out there,” Gano said following Friday’s game. “But at the same time, I’m fully focused on kicking the ball.”
Gano traveled with his teammates to Indianapolis and was a perfect 3-for-3 in Friday’s 16-3 win over the Colts. He connected from 28, 27 and 26 yards out. He was also 3-for-3 in the first preseason game against Pittsburgh.
Gano already has beaten out Shayne Graham, who the Redskins released following the Steelers game. But Washington also signed kicker Clint Stitser, who was 7-of-8 in field goal attempts in five games with Cincinnati last season. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said earlier in the week the team might sign an extra kicker, in case Gano couldn’t make the trip.
It wasn’t clear whether Stitser would stick around and compete with Gano through the remainder of the preseason. Stitser was in Indianapolis and in uniform but appeared to struggle with some of his pregame kicks.
Gano, who had trouble late last season, said he is feeling pretty good heading into the third preseason game.
“I have really no worries while I’m out there. It feels natural,” he said. “I’m really excited about it. I can’t wait until next week.”
