Online Pro Bowl voting already underway

Fan voting for the 2012 Pro Bowl has gotten underway and will continue until mid-December.

It’s still early, but nearly every Redskins starter is on the ballot, as are kick returner Brandon Banks, kicker Graham Gano, punter Sav Rocca and special teams captain Lorenzo Alexander.

Among Redskins candidates, Brian Orakpo leads all NFC outside linebackers with 4.5 sacks.

Banks leads the NFC in both kick returns (19) and kick return yardage (462), and his average of 24.3 ranks ninth.

Fred Davis has 28 catches for 423 yards (third in the NFC among tight ends) and two touchdowns.

Rocca leads the NFL with punts inside the 20, and he and the Redskins’ punt return unit have held opponents to an average of 6.4 yards per return (ninth-fewest in the NFL).

Alexander plays on every special teams unit. On kickoffs, the Redskins have limited opponents to an average of just 18.6 yards per return (tops in the NFL).

Only eight weeks into the season, the Pro Bowl remains a long way off, but selection serves as a motivating factor from the start of the season until the final game.

“You definitely think about it,” Alexander said. “If you’re making the Pro Bowl, you’re being dominant and that’s the best way you can help your team. That’s what I want to do, create a spark and make some plays to lift your team.”

Mike Jones covers the Washington Redskins for The Washington Post. When not writing about a Redskins development of some kind – which is rare – he can be found screaming and cheering at one of his kids’ softball, baseball, soccer or basketball games.
