Some quick notes from coach Mike Shanahan’s post-practice briefing Wednesday:

Shanahan said Brandon Banks sat out with a swollen knee. It’s the same knee Banks had surgery on last November.

Ryan Torain left practice with a hand injury. The running back was hurt in 11-on-11 drills and had a splint placed on it. Shanahan said X-rays will be done.

Shanahan said John Beck was fine today after suffering from soreness in his shoulder yesterday. Beck and Rex Grossman will each get a fair number of first-team snaps as they compete for the starting quarterback job, he said.

Punter Sav Rocca has yet to join the team, but Shanahan hopes his visa issue will soon be resolved so Rocca can get to Ashburn by Monday.

Phillip Buchanon declined interview requests and wouldn’t say why he has been suspended by the NFL for four games.

Shanahan hasn’t decided how he will split game playing time between kickers Shayne Graham and Graham Gano.

The team has yet to practice in full pads, but Shanahan said the offensive and defensive linemen are going full speed in shells. The coach will see how the veteran free agent additions do tomorrow and will determine when to go in full pads.

First-round draft pick Ryan Kerrigan remains “two or three days” away from returning to full action, Shanahan said.
