The NFL released its schedule for the 2011 season Tuesday evening, and the Washington Redskins’docket features a home opener against the New York Giants, a game in Canada, a tough December slate and then a New Year’s Day regular season finale at Philadelphia.

The Redskins’ season opener against the Giants will kick off 4:15 p.m. on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the District Washington area and New York.

It will mark the third time in the last three seasons that the Redskins have opened the season against the Giants. Washington kicked off both the 2008 and 2009 campaigns in the Meadowlands. Last season the Redskins opened at home against the Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins last season went 0-2 against the Giants.

After hosting the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 18, the Redskins will face the Cowboys on Monday Night Football on Sept. 26. It’s the only prime-time game on Washington’s schedule. Last season, the Redskins beat Dallas 13-7 in the season opener, but fell 33-30 in the rematch on Dec. 19.

The following week, Washington plays at St. Louis, and then comes a bye in Week 5. The Redskins resume play at home with their third NFC East matchup of the season, taking on the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 16. The Redskins split with the Eagles last season. They won in Donovan McNabb’s return to Philadelphia, but then got embarrassed 59-28 at FedEx Field on Monday Night Football.

From there, Washington travels to Carolina, which went 2-14 last season and holds the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.

Week 8 features Washington’s first international regular season game. The Redskins will play the Buffalo Bills in Toronto on Oct. 30. The Bills in 2008 began playing one regular season game a year in Toronto.

November features a home game against San Francisco, a game at Miami the following week, and then the Cowboys come to town on Nov. 20. Three days after Thanksgiving, the Redskins play at Seattle.

December features a tough slate with back-to-back home games against the Jets and Patriots, a road game against the Giants and a home game against Minnesota on Christmas Eve.

The Redskins will conclude the regular season at Philadelphia on New Year’s Day.

The Redskins’ opponents for the coming season were determined on the final day of the 2010 season, but the order of those matchups weren’t released by the NFL until Tuesday evening.

The NFL released the preseason schedule last week, and Washington is slated for home games against Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, and road games at Indianapolis and Baltimore.
