The Redskins have a new quarterback in camp after signing undrafted rookie Marc Verica out of the University of Virginia, according to the school’s sports information department.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday morning that the team would be at least temporarily adding another quarterback to help keep John Beck and Ben Chappell from wearing their arms out as the only quarterbacks in camp. (The team has signed Kellen Clemens and plans on re-signing Rex Grossman, but veteran free agents can’t practice until Aug. 4 under league rules).

“You don’t want to overwork the quarterbacks. A lot of time their legs will be sore, that’s going to happen. But you never want to overdo it with somebody’s arm. Both the quarterbacks have been throwing quite a bit.”

Shanahan said the new quarterback will be in camp at least through Thursday.

Verica last season passed for 2,799 yards and 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 58.8 percent of his passes for Virginia.
