A first-quarter call was overturned on an instant replay challenge by the Bills after the officials erroneously ruled a touchback on a punt by Buffalo. Following the replay review, the Redskins were given possession at their 4-yard line.
The Bills and their fans also were upset when pass interference wasn’t called on the Redskins despite a good deal of contact on a first half incompletion.
Replacement officials are working preseason games because the members of the NFL Referees Association have been locked out by the league. The two sides have been unable to agree on a new labor deal.
There was plenty of criticism of the work of the replacement officials across the league Thursday.
“These officials are in over their heads,” former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon wrote on Twitter. “Something needs to be done before somebody gets hurt.”
Former NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker wrote on Twitter: “These replacement refs have no idea what a hold is in the NFL.”
